8 Great Reasons To Find Your Passion In Life (A Bible Study)
Let’s get this right from the start. Passion and purpose are two very different things. Purpose comes from God and is the same for every single believer:
Love God and worship Him.
Love people and share about Jesus.
But your passions are your interests. The things you love to do that fill you with joy. And very often you can do them with ease and in unique ways that make other people go ‘Wow!’
We’ll use the story of David and Goliath, which is found in 1 Samuel 17. It will help us identify 8 reasons why we should find our passion in life.
Yes, we should stretch boundaries but don't put yourself in a position to be harmed. David knew what he could do and he did just that.
Saul put his armour on David and he tried to walk. But he couldn’t because he wasn’t accustomed to the weight and feel of armour while fighting (1 Samuel 17: 38-39).
David did not slow himself down with useless armour that might have caused his death.
When you know your skills you know how far to push the limits. Sometimes we just want to prove we can do something. Shut the mouths of the naysayers.
But at that very moment you may not be ready for a particular action. It's not worth your life or reputation taking on tasks that are too risky.
David put on the armour and took up the sword. Immediately he said he couldn't go to battle with them. He didn't need to fight or try them out to know they weren't for him.
Now I am all for learning, growing and developing. But sometimes we just waste precious time doing things that do not help us move forward in life. Time that we can’t get back.
Don’t waste your time with busy work. Focus on improving your skills where your talents lie and let them take you far in your business and in life.
David never worried about whether he could do the job. When he arrived at the scene and heard Goliath’s threats this was his immediate response in verse 26:
26 Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel?
He didn't second guess his skills. He had only tested them in the fields on lions and bears. But he knew that with those very skills, and God's help, that there was no need to worry about the outcome.
When we are confident in our abilities we don't stress when we need to use them. We go forward with boldness knowing that God is with us.
Here’s what 1 Samuel 18:12-13 says:
Now Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, but had departed from Saul. 13 Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand
David went from shepherd boy to commanding 1000 men in Saul’s army.
He caught Saul's attention after Goliath was killed. Saul wanted to know who the young boy was and told his men to find out (1 Samuel 17: 55-56).
Even though he was jealous of David and wanted to kill him, he was also afraid of what he carried on the inside.
You have something on the inside of you that some people may be afraid of. They may even be jealous.
But they will not stop your promotion! When you excel in your passions you will get opportunities for promotion even if they comes through the very people that want to stop you.
It's called favour. It comes from God and cannot be bought, sold, traded or stolen.
If David was alive today I can just see his ‘I help’ statement in his giant slaying business…
“I help scared soldiers defeat giants and kill wild animals with a slingshot and a stone” .😄
If there was ever a need for that niche David had it down to a fine art.
When you are an expert, even if it's in something unusual or unique, you will be the ‘go to’ person in that area.
I recently learned about a job called ‘Hippotherapy’. This is therapy involving the use of horses to help patients improve in different areas of life such as speech, motor skills, cognitive ability and sensory input.
In the horse industry there are so many different jobs -
jockey
horse trainer
vet
…and the list goes on.
But imagine combining occupational therapy, speech therapy and horses. That’s pretty unique.
And unique jobs command huge salaries. According to ‘Glassdoor’, at the time this article was written, using all the years of experience as an average, someone who practices hippotherapy can make between $74,000 and $114,000 a year in the US.
Knowing your passion in life and walking in it opens up doors for income that can transform your life and open up amazing doors for your family.
When David heard Goliath belittling the Israelites his first instinct was to ask who was the uncircumcised Philistine over there. He didn't bow down in fear or run away. He attacked the problem head on because he knew what he could do and who God was.
Saul, in turn, responded to David’s confidence to do the job. Apart from his brothers, these men didn’t know him from a can of paint.
In verses 34-37, David gave his resume for the job:
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, 35 I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it.
36 Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37 Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”
He’d get my vote!
After that speech Saul said, “Go and the Lord be with you!”. And then Saul suited him up.
Knowing your passion builds confidence in you and that influences others to respond with trust.
At the end of the day David killed Goliath. Period.
He achieved his goal because he knew what he could do and he went out and did it based on his skills and strengths.
What can you go out and achieve in life based on your knowledge and skills?

This is my favourtie part of David and Goliath.
And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. 52 Now the men of Israel and Judah arose and shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as the entrance of the valley and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell along the road to Shaaraim, even as far as Gath and Ekron. 53 Then the children of Israel returned from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their tents.
After David killed Goliath and beheaded him, the Israelites jumped out of the trenches and ran after the other Philistines to kill them. Watching David do the impossible stirred up something in them to follow.
You have that same ability in you.
When you use what you're gifted in and succeed, you encourage others to rise up and do the same.
You have the power to influence, encourage and inspire other people to overcome fear and find their own passions in life.
Let me stop here because I can keep going.
But you have eight (8) reasons to find your passion in life.
When we embrace our uniqueness and flow in our passions, positive and powerful results are inevitable. Don’t wait another moment. The world needs what you have. Find it and walk in it.
I love hosting workshops and conferences to help Christian leaders use what they have to go forward in life.
